On Thursday November 24th, Eastern College’s Saint John campus hosted the launch of the Child and Youth Care with Addictions Support Worker program. The event launch had an impressive list of guests in attendance, providing an ideal environment for learning and networking.

Suzanne Azevedo, the Child and Youth Care with Addictions Support Worker program instructor from the Moncton campus gave a detailed and informative presentation on the expectations of the program, the different modules that are taught, learning styles, and went on to discuss where students from Eastern College are now working in the industry.

Azevedo held a Q&A session at the end of her presentation, and explained that the success rate in this program is 100%, sharing testimonials from graduates that she had taught. It was made clear that the focus of this program is not only learning to help others, but also to become more self-aware and grow as a person and professional.

The keynote speaker of the evening was Gregory Zed, the Area Manager of Addictions and Mental Health Network in Sussex, NB. Greg has been in the field for over 40 years and has seen the number of suicides in youth and the increase in mental health cases each year. He went on to talk about the statistics and our poverty rate, and how companies like Horizon Health and Addictions Services will be looking to hire professional graduates of this Eastern College program. Greg is a huge supporter of this program and was happy to endorse the college.

OutFlow, a local men’s shelter, YMCA of Greater Saint John, and the new KV Oasis Youth Center were also at the launch, happy to talk to potential students about the future of child and youth care.

Eastern College will be offering the Child and Youth Care with Addictions Support Worker program at the Saint John campus in the New Year. To get more details on the program, click here.
